FIELD GEOLOGIST/ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENTIST
JOB SUMMARY
Responsibilities include field tasks associated with environmental site
assessment, site characterization, soil and groundwater monitoring, and data
analysis as well as monitoring remedial projects and field explorations.
Will prepare field boring logs and well construction diagrams as well as
related technical supporting materials. Duties will include drafting field
work plans, maintaining accurate field notes and records, compiling
laboratory data into Excel tables, analyzing data and drafting field
investigation reports, figures, tables and appendices. Will also assist in
writing and obtaining field service subcontractor quotes, and scheduling and
overseeing field service subcontractor personnel during drilling and
sampling activities. Must have practical field experience and willing to be
“hand’s on”. The qualifying candidate may also be asked to take on project
management responsibilities in the future.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Accurately document soil stratigraphy and groundwater conditions in
the field and collect samples according to published protocols.
Mobilize and De-mobilize equipment and supplies as necessary to
maintain field activities.
Maintain and inventory field equipment and supplies.
Assist in collecting samples of other environmental media (such as
asbestos containing materials, mold samples etc.) for submittal to a
laboratory for required analysis.
May perform field analytical tests (microscope air analysis,
photo-ionization detector, Sensidyne Gas Detector tubes, Hanby field
test, etc.) on environmental samples and report results to supervisor.
Calibrate field testing equipment and maintain logs for quality
control purposes.
Oversee subcontractor company employees to ensure completion of
scope of services.
Assemble preliminary data including field notes and observations,
historical research records, interview notes for supervisor review.
Makes notes and reports on special safety or environmental
situations and discuss immediately with supervisor any project
deviations.
ADDITIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES
Continuously evaluate site conditions and make decisions regarding
appropriate personal protective equipment requirements.
Keep various records and log books up-to-date.
Prepare draft reports on computer.
Conduct site inspections and perform background research
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Must be innovative, self motivated, have proven communication and
problem solving skills and be adaptable to changing/diverse field
conditions.
Ability to interpret data and make decisions based on scientific
facts.
Knowledge of use and limitations of field testing equipment and
personal protective equipment.
Ideal candidate will also be innovative, self motivated, have proven

General knowledge of first aid.
Drafting skills and experience are helpful.
Requires a valid drivers license and good driving record.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor’s degree in geology, hydrogeology, environmental science,
engineering, earth science, or other relevant field, with 1-3 years of
relevant experience. Geology/ hydrogeology preferred. Basic knowledge of
soils necessary. Current OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training desired. AutoCAD
experience preferred.
