Local brownfield eligible for grants

INDIANAPOLIS — Cleaning up contaminated soil and groundwater at old gas stations is a first step toward redeveloping the properties for new uses. Now the state has freed up $750,000 to help Southern Indiana communities identify and cleanse brownfields, long-abandoned or neglected plots of land such as old filling stations where gasoline or oil might have leached into the soil or groundwater.

Six locations in Evansville and three more in surrounding counties became eligible for state brownfield grants this week. Because there are more potential projects statewide than there is grant funding, they will have to be prioritized.
